GRANT PARK
Grant Park is one of the oldest parks in Chicago and was established in 1835, just a few years after the city was incorporated. However, it was not officially named Grant Park until 1901, in honor of President Ulysses S. Grant. The park has a rich history and has been protected by several key figures, including Aaron Montgomery Ward, who fought to keep the lakefront free of private development and preserve it as public parkland. Additionally, architect and planner Daniel Burnham played a significant role in designing and developing the park. During the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, Grant Park served as a refuge for thousands of displaced residents. The park also played a role in the city’s recovery, as it was the site of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, which helped to revitalize the city and bring it back from the brink of economic collapse.
Grant Park and Millennium Park are both located in downtown Chicago and host a variety of festivals and events throughout the year. Some of the major festivals that take place in these parks include:
- Grant Park Music Festival: This classical music festival, held in Millennium Park at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, features the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus. It is the nation’s only free, outdoor classical music series of its kind and typically runs from June to August.
- Taste of Chicago: The largest food festival in Chicago, Taste of Chicago takes place in Grant Park, usually in July. The festival showcases the city’s diverse culinary scene, with food from local restaurants, live music, cooking demonstrations, and family-friendly activities.
- Lollapalooza: This world-famous music festival is held in Grant Park, typically in early August. Lollapalooza features a diverse lineup of popular bands and artists across multiple stages, attracting music fans from around the world.
- Chicago Blues Festival: Held in Millennium Park, this free, annual event celebrates the rich history of blues music in Chicago. It usually takes place in June and features local, national, and international blues artists.
- Chicago Jazz Festival: This festival is held in Millennium Park during Labor Day weekend, showcasing local and international jazz musicians. It is a free event that highlights the city’s strong jazz tradition.
- Chicago SummerDance: As previously mentioned, Chicago SummerDance is a free outdoor dance series in Grant Park that runs from June through August or early September. Participants can learn various dance styles and enjoy live music.
